WHY STRAIGHT AND CRANKED BARS PROVIDED IN THE SLAB

WHY STRAIGHT AND CRANKED BARS PROVIDED IN THE SLAB

Figure shows the straight and cranked bars

We have already studied that load act on the slab will be at the centre of the slab

In the slab deflection is high in the shorter span.

In order to transfer that the bending moment developed at bottom of the slab, main reinforcement is provided.

The main purpose of the main bars is to transfer the bending moment developed at the bottom and ends of slab to the columns.

In main reinforcement there are two types of baras

1. Cranked bars

 2. Straight bars

1. Function of the cranked bars

Cranked bars transfer the negative bending moment developed at the ends of the slab. The bellow figure shows the negative bending moment developed at the ends of the slab.

2. Function of the straight bars

Straight bars transfer the positive bending moment developed at the centre of the slab. The bellow figure shows the positive bending moment developed at the ends of the slab.
